In the 1800s, a young boy, Ignatz Von Peczely, happened to catch an owl in his garden. The boy clearly saw a black line rising in the owls eye after accidentally breaking its leg during the struggle. He kept the bird until it had regained its health and then observed the appearance of crocked white lines across the black area in the owls eye. Von Peczely later became a physician and had the opportunity to study the irises of many patients. He grew certain that there existed a reflex relationship between tissue changes in the body and iris markings and developed the first iris chart, which has been continually researched and revised over the years. This is a dramatic contrast to the lives of the wealthy, where everything is shiny, new, and always changing, whereas the ashes are perpetual and dismal. Every time Nick describes the Valley of Ashes, something grim is happening, or about to happen. For example, after Myrtle is killed, Wilson’s â€Å"glazed eyes turned out to the ashheaps, where small grey clouds took on fantastic shapes and scurried here and there in the faint dawn win.† (159) Wilson has almost completely lost himself at this point, and when he looks out to the ashheaps he is seeing what his life was: poverty. Unchangeable, murky poverty, that he couldn’t get Myrtle or himself out of. However, in WIlson’s delusion, he feels like there is a way he can make things right. He has to go and find Tom, who he believed to be driving the ‘â€Å"death car† and kill him to avenge Myrtle. Once he finds out someone else had been driving the car, he goes to find Gatsby. â€Å"A new world, material without being real, where poor ghosts, breathing dreams like air, drifted fortuitously about Like that ashen, fantastic figure gliding toward him through the amorphous trees.† (161) After Wilson shoots Gatsby, he also shoots himself because he feels like he has no other way to escape his life of hardship, and Nick describes his body as being â€Å"ashen† which invokes the image of the dull, grey valley where Wilson had lived. He didn’t belong in the fast paced life of the wealthy, and wouldn’t have been able to handle it  because of how weak minded he was. The poor were trapped in poverty, under the formidable ashes.

Cyberpunk on the Web Finding information on the World Wide Web can hardly be called troublesome; most of the time it's as easy as clicking a button. However, finding information that one would consider good or visually appealing seems a more difficult task. Many times web designers throw meaningless fluff onto the medium, not bothering to think about the cleanliness of the work or the aesthetic value of the overall creation. The World Wide Web holds more than just data, it holds images; images intertwined with the information to build a lasting image of the work. Web pages should convey an idea quickly and efficiently, either through good writing or visual aids, and should not confuse the user with misleading images and phrases. Also, web pages should not be bulky; that means that they should be small and direct, not embedded with huge images that would ordinarily tax even the speediest of data lines. The Cyberpunk home page, a personal page located at the URL http://www.cs.uidaho.edu/lal/cyberspace/cybe rpunk/cyberpunk.html, excels in its computational efficiency. In regards to the visual and informative aspects of the page, however, the Cyberpunk page falls short of perfection. The Cyberpunk home page is not commerical in nature. Rather, it is maintained by Luke Shenman, a student at the University of Idaho. Some would argue that because it is not a commercial page, it should not be evalutated by the same criteria as a commercial page. However, there are many personal pages that, judged alongside commercial pages, would rate higher marks. Overall, I'd say that The Cyberpunk page could use a lot of work. A nice background to start with, but not necessarily a "nice" background. Rather, a harsh background would convey more of the point of the cyberpunk movement, as well inviting the user to explore the genre. Reorganization of the subheadings and some tightening of the text would benefit the work greatly, with some parts of the first page moved to subsequent pages with more elaboration. A new title image, conveying the harshness of the cyberpunk psyche, would be a good way to start off the page. Finally, some images of cyberpunk characters and fiction would brighten up the page while still gently prodding the user toward the information, which is the whole point of the World Wide Web.

However, I think it is very important to discuss the ways in which children learn to read. Reading has become a very important element in our society. With the rapid advancement of America, having good reading skills is essential to getting ahead in jobs and even in making dinner. Children are the future doctors, lawyers, and presidents of our country and I, as a future teacher, wouldn’t want to send children out into the world with poor reading skills.
